OF TRELLISING
A methodical and rigorous trellis allows the vine to spread in the
direction required by wine growers to make the mechanisation easier.
The aesthetic dimension also should be borne in mind.
Recent studies have shown that the well-planned use of trellising
could have a profound effect on the quality of the harvest.
It appears that by increasing the leaf surface exposed, the
effectiveness of photosynthesis is improved, a result of the
maximum use of the energy supplied by the vegetation. The
consequences are:
- an increase in sugar, and therefore in the degree of alcohol
- a better sugar / acidity balance
- a stronger accumulation of colouring matter and tannins
- a greater increase in compound phenols
